A shot in the dark 

For Nikki Porter, all it took was one radio plug on a random night out for her to decide to step out of her comfort zone and try her hand at auditioning to be the next Monster jock. “I heard that they were holding auditions when I was on my way to Poblacion to party,” she recalled. “And then when I woke up the next day, I was still hungover, but for some reason, I still remembered they were looking for new jocks.” Yup, that sounds just like the Nikki we know! 

She decided to give the auditions a shot, and although she didn’t expect much to come out of it, she nailed each step of the process! “At least, like, I put my foot in the door,” she thought. "And then eventually, when I would get the text, I would try and think of the next step already. But not really expecting much. Like, I just thought, let’s see how far I can go. Until I found out I went all the way!”

Building rapport 

Since stepping out of her shell, Nikki has gotten along with all her fellow jocks and become comfortable with her personality as a DJ. “When I first started, I was pretty nervous,” she said. “I’ve never auditioned for a job in my life! So this was a little bit of a culture shock, but then as soon as I started training, I soon realized, it was cool to see there are people I work with who are somewhat like-minded also, and young.” 

When it comes to being comfortable with herself on air, Nikki had MJ and Ria to thank. “It’s scary, like you’re kind of confused at first, like how you wanna deliver yourself on air. So the more comfortable I got with them, the more of myself came out on the show as well.”

And now that she’s found her voice, she gets to use that… to argue with her current show partner, Chino! “Chino actually helps me [with] how to argue! Hahahaha! Which is a good thing!” she said (while Chino listened on the other side of the booth). “I hate confrontation, but with our show now, we like to exchange ideas. And even if he disagrees with it, and he thinks he’s right, I like to stay on my side of things. So I try to find ways on how to healthily argue with Chino.”

Even off the air, all the other jocks would agree that Nikki’s personality is gold! She loves to bake, she’s got amazing wit, and she can brighten up the room once you see her attempting to make TikToks and memes with Ria or is in a kwento sesh with anyone in the office.

Perks of being a Monster 

One of the most exciting parts of Nikki’s job is getting to talk to some of the rising stars and big names in the entertainment biz! “There definitely are perks to being a Monster jock,” she said. “I got to talk to LANY! Hahaha! Oh, and I got to talk to Harry Mack also! Yeah, that was a lot of fun.” A dream come true for someone like Nikki, who’s a big music and pop culture fan, to meet people from around the country and the world while in a pandemic! Thank God for the internet, right? 

After more than two years of showing her true colors, feeding the RX staff with her amazing cookies, talking to local and international stars, and just having tons of fun as DJ, we love to see this version of Nikki that has blossomed on the Monster! “I’m grateful to have this job, because again, this is something that I was never really into. So I was just really shocked with myself that like, I’m still here! So it’s a lot of fun. People are fun, and it’s just really great.”
