Shooting his shot
How Rico started on RX is no typical story of just finding out about the job and going to the station to audition; it was all because of a RX jock back then Rico had a crush on that made him shoot his shot, not just with the girl but also in trying out his luck when the Monster had a jock opening. Rico recalled the time he was visiting this RX jock he had a crush on and was advised about a slot opening up on the roster and Rico was definitely all in and down to try!
Prior to being a radio DJ, Rico was also an actor and TV personality having quite an experience in that industry until he made a transition to radio. “With radio, you can’t just wing it, you have to come prepared. You can’t just be pacute [and] smile. And then [in] comes research, you have to really research and prepare for your shows and that’s what I’ve come to learn.” Another thing Rico learned when he first started was radio production. He used to watch the experienced jocks back then producing. He then made his own ad and recalled how the volume levels were so bad. But here in the Monster, there’s a lot of creative freedom which really gave Rico a lot of chances to express himself.
“I’m the pinaka-pasaway dito eh. [...] Ako yung pinaka-pasaway sa Monster. Always getting in trouble. Always. When it comes to kalokohan.” Rico used to get in trouble with the bosses due to his crazy shenanigans. In his first ever show, titled Backseat, Rico was questioned by the bosses because of the show’s on-air commercial which is not that radio-friendly. Rico just finds the whole thing funny now!
Reinvention of Rico Robles
You would never think that Rico would describe himself as an introvert because of his high energy and very friendly nature. But yes, Rico is a self-proclaimed introvert and only shows his extraversion when needed. Back in his Pinoy Big Brother days, Rico would get comments about being asked to speak up more as he was known as a radio DJ. It was just how he is, a quiet guy and would really come out of his shell when he has to. When he’s out he “Kanye-s” it out, but on days when he has to chill, he’d certainly bring it down a notch.
“When I step out of my house, it’s actually not me. You’ll get a part of me but not really 100% me.” Rico just has a lot of layers to him that he brings out every day.
When the digital era is coming to fruition, Rico found it challenging yet exciting. He also admits that he’s not really a computer-savvy guy but he’s surely willing to learn. Rico is at TikTok as well, so that’s a start! He may not be a TikTok dancer… yet but who knows! You might see Rico on your For You Page busting out his moves.
Rico is always evolving, reinventing himself through the years. He was first known as the “Heartthrob DJ” to becoming a boxer to Rico Chismoso to now being a cook and recently, a TikToker. “The only limit that you have is yourself.” Here at the Monster, Rico believes that you can be anything and anyone who you want to be!
Rico is homegrown, only starting out and still continuing his journey here at RX. “One thing I love about RX is that we don’t have bosses, we have a family.” Rico also formed a very special bond with the big bosses where he can just casually invite them out for a drink. His relationship with them as well is not at all a boss-employee type but rather more of a father-son where they can casually talk about their personal lives. Rico received a handful of life and love advice from the bosses (and some from his co-workers too!) which he truly kept to heart. Of course, Rico also gave advice himself especially to the newer jocks. Having been at RX for a long time, Rico earned a lot of experiences and the main thing he would always say is to “Protect your credibility” and “Always come prepared.”
A little known fact, Rico is actually a registered nurse. During the pandemic, Rico has been doing his part as a radio jock to help keep the entertainment alive despite the current situation just so he can help out in easing the situation in a way. At the height of the pandemic back in 2020, the show kept going and All Out did a lot of interviews left and right. Rico wanted to give these artists or celebrities a platform where they can just talk and share their feelings at a difficult time. The bosses were also on board with having a jam-packed schedule full of interviews, as long as Rico and Karla can manage it. And they definitely did!
Rico just has that perfect blend of charm, humor and friendliness in him with a side of his different personas. He has also come full circle, starting out at quite a young age and achieving so much until now!
