Last February 8, Pentatonix put on an amazing show for their Filipino fans (a.k.a. Pentaholics) at the SMART Araneta Coliseum!
First and foremost, the concert goers' saftey was a priority for that night! Guards at the entrance took people's temperature as they entered the Big Dome, and people were requested to wear masks. Health is wealth! Plus, a face mask never stopped Pinoys from singing along and having fun! And we're super glad that the show still pushed through despite the recent virus scare.
The excitement in the crowd was palpable once the stage lights came on and Pentatonix started their first song. Fans up to the upper box section were going crazy! This was their second time to perform in Manila, hopefully some newer fans got to catch their show this time around! Cause if you think they're good in videos, oh wow, they're just as incredibly talented performing live.
Pentatonix opened with a medley of Daft Punk songs, one of their most popular YouTube videos to date with OVER 300 MILLION views! And no wonder it's such a big hit, because it's amazing that an acapella group could pull off a cover of music that's mostly electronic. They also sang a mashup of Camila Cabello's Havana and Senorita before they took a pause to greet everyone in the audience.
Then, Scott introduced himself and everyone in the group (him, Mitch, Kirstin, Kevin, and the newest member Matt). He remembered how their first time in Manila was their favorite crowd they've ever performed for, which they always talk about in interviews. Filipino fans were super kilig to hear that!
The show continued, and Pentatonix performed their first original song, "Can't Sleep Love," which is full of good vibes. They also sang snippets from their older covers and told us the stories behind them; their "Telephone" by Lady Gaga cover (the first song they arranged together), "Dog Days Are Over" by Florence and the Machine, and Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know" (one of their first viral videos) to name a few. Their seating arrangement on the couch onstage was a cute little callback to their old YouTube videos!
Pentatonix is also known for their amazing Evolution videos, where they sing an artists songs from the start of their career to current jams. At the show, they sang a little bit of their "Evolution of Music," which showcases how music styles have changed over the years, from classical, to boogie, to pop. Just goes to show how diverse the group's musical style and knowledge is! Later on, they also sang "Evolution of Ariana Grande" from her early hits like "The Way" to current jams "thank u, next" and "Imagine."
Other songs from that night were their newest original track "Happy Now," and some choral-inspired tunes like the fun cover of "Come Along." The song was accopmanied by some psychedelic visuals on the LED that were really colorful and playful (and kinda trippy)! It was pretty funny too, because as Mitch introduced the song he said, "I still don't really know what this song is about!"
The atmosphere in the venue became peaceful and mellow when Pentatonix sang their cover of John Lennon's "Imagine." Everyone's cellphone lights went up, swaying to the group's perfect harmonies. As if everyone in the audience was one, coming together, sharing in this moment.
Also, it was really interesting to see how diverse Pentatonix's crowd was that night! As in, every age group from 10-year-old kids to the elderly fans! It really shows that anyone can appreciate the talent of Pentatonix. I wonder if they noticed it, too!
What came next was one of the most solid origin stories: How the PTX beatboxer Kevin Olusola became a member of the group. According to Scott, all they did was type in 'beatboxer' on YouTube and they found Kevin's video. And it wasn't just any regular beatbox video – he was beatboxing while playing the cello. They knew instantly that they wanted Kevin in, and he originally declined the invite to audition, but ended up flying across the country to join them anyway!
Kevin took the spotlight to show the audience his "cello-boxing" and it. Was. Mindblowing. Watching him materfully blend his beatboxing and cello skills was a treat, and it seemed so natural to him. Love a guy with a ton of talent! It was quite the experience live, but here's a video to get an idea of how it went.

Other songs they covered were "Shallow" from A Star Is Born, Dua Lipa's "Don't Stop Now," and even "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen, which they NAILED, by the way. I think Freddie Mercury would be proud. Plus, we've gotta give credit to Mitch, whose range is crazy! He could go from Lady Gaga's high notes in Shallow, Ariana Grande falsettos, and even guitar solos from Bohemian Rhapsody. These Pentatonix just keep on showing us how multi-talented they are!
Before singing their last few songs, Kevin and Matt hyped up the whole crowd with a singalong game. They got everyone chanting and singing along to We Will Rock You (a classic crowd pleaser!), I Want It That Way (a Pinoy fave, of course), and Old Town Road. They even got down from the stage and went all around the VIP section to interact and sing with the fans! It was impossible not to be excited and hyped.
The last song of their set was "On My Way Home," which they dedicated to the Philippines, saying that they don't get to go back home a lot, but being in the Philippines makes them feel more at home than other places. Aww, how sweet! But of course, the Filipino fans wouldn't let them leave without an encore! Apart from screaming for more, thr audience also started singing to the melody of "On My Way Home" to get them to come back on stage. It was such a Pinoy way to start an encore! Needless to say, Pentatonix loved that the crowd could sing, and said it was super touching.
The group performed "Hallelujah" for their final song, which they said is their favorite song to perform. Cellphone lights were up once again for this beautiful moment. The show really ended on a high note! Big thanks to Wilbros Live for making Pentatonix in Manila possible!
