The Maine’s Filipino fans were more than okay at #YOUAREOKMnl last September 14 at the New Frontier Theater.
The opening act was Wanderer, a.k.a. Adam Simons who plays guitar and keys with The Maine on tour. He was a new face to some of us, but he sounded great - he even covered a One Direction song! After the opening act, a countdown appeared on the LED— a pretty solid way of telling us that the boys were about to come on stage in a few seconds!
The Maine came out in their new signature look: all white suits, looking as good as ever (I swear, these guys don't age). Everyone screamed along to their first song Slip the Noose! Before they continued, John O’ Callaghan told everyone to put down their phones and enjoy the moment. “You wouldn’t have bought a ticket to come see us tonight if you wanted to watch it through a screen!" So everyone put their phones away and just spent the night jumping, dancing, and singing.
They mostly played songs from their two latest albums You Are OK and Lovely Little Lonely, but it was an awesome surprise to hear them play older hits like We All Roll Along, When I’m At Home, and more. A lucky fan even got to come on stage and sing Taxi with the band! There was definitely a mix of excitement and jealousy from the rest of the crowd, but it was a very fun moment either way.
Aside from the music, the visuals were one of the best parts of show. Colorful, creative, bold backdrops with different The Maine quotes like "Is the sadness everlasting?" and "In this moment I could die with you" were a treat for the eyes, and they complemented the band's set perfectly! Plus, they make awesome photos for the gram later.
Later on, the fans started chanting “Saving Grace! Saving Grace!” It took a bit of convincing, but eventually they gave in. John admitted that they barely remembered how to play it - I mean, it is from one of their oldest albums, but the fans request it every time The Maine plays here! Even though John couldn't remember the words that much, the crowd helped by singing along as he played the first verse and chorus to Saving Grace.
It was a very sentimental moment when The Maine ended their set with Another Night on Mars. The band invited everyone to put their arms around each other - whether it was a friend or a stranger - and jam to the last song together. We all swayed and sang along togher, and John proudly raised a Philippine flag that a fan passed to the stage.
No doubt that this band always puts on a great show! We hope they come back again soon!
