After four decades of shaping the alternative rock scene, legendary band Pixies finally made their long-awaited Manila debut as part of the ‘Pixies 40 World Tour’ last May 10 at The Filinvest Tent in Alabang. The concert brought together generations of Filipino fans united by their love for the band’s influential sound and enduring legacy.

Filipino alternative rock band Sandwich opened the night with Tuesday Vargas filling in on vocals. The group energized the crowd with a strong lineup of OPM favorites, including ‘Two Trick Pony,’ ‘Walang Kadala Dala,’ ‘Kagulo,’ and ‘Sugod,’ proudly showcasing Pinoy rock talent.

As the lights dimmed and anticipation filled the venue, Pixies officially kicked off their Manila debut with ‘Cactus.’ The band — composed of Black Francis, Emma Richardson, David Lovering, and Joey Santiago — delivered an unforgettable performance packed with classics that fans had waited decades to hear live. Santiago’s appearance was especially meaningful for Filipino audiences, as he wore a barong Tagalog during the homecoming concert.

The band performed iconic tracks like ‘Monkey Gone to Heaven,’ ‘Wave of Mutilation,’ and ‘Here Comes Your Man,’ sparking waves of nostalgia as fans passionately sang along.
Despite the electric atmosphere, Joey Santiago, who was reportedly under the weather, performed portions of the show seated and briefly stepped offstage during ‘Kings of the Prairie’ and part of ‘Winterlong.’ Nevertheless, the guitarist returned with renewed energy and powered through the remainder of the set.

A standout moment came as Pixies staged the ‘UK Surf’ version of ‘Wave of Mutilation,’ followed by ‘Gouge Away’ and ‘Tame.’ The crowd was hyped and echoed every lyric back to the band.
To close the night, Pixies delivered their most defining songs, including ‘Where Is My Mind?’ and ‘Into the White,’ and an encore performance of “Bone Machine.” The finale left fans immersed in pure nostalgia, marking the iconic band's memorable first Manila performance.

The night was a celebration of Pixies’ 40 years of groundbreaking music and a long-awaited connection with Filipino fans.
Thank you, Pixies, for a Manila debut that will undoubtedly remain a cherished memory for every alternative/rock fan.
