If there was any phrase to describe beabadoobee’s energy onstage, it would be “sugar, spice, and everything nice.” The London-based Filipino singer-songwriter pulled off an incredible homecoming show on the Manila leg of her Beatopia Tour last Friday, September 16!
New Frontier Theater was filled with fans sporting Y2K inspired outfits (very beababoobee), excited to finally see her first show in the Philippines. Then Beatrice Kristi Laus, a.k.a. beabadoobee, came on stage dressed in a very chic modern barong and mini skirt, saying “I’m back, baby!” before kicking off her show with “Worth It” to an energetic crowd.
beabadoobee exuded the perfect mix of charming and feisty, rocking out with the band for hits like “Together,” “Charlie Brown,” and Monster favorite “Care,” but sprinkling in sweet smiles and waves to the audience in between songs. "Pasensya na, ang Tagalog ko konti lang,” she admitted, eliciting supportive cheers & applause. “But it's good to be back home."
Her set gave a sense of 2000s punk nostalgia, injected with her own indie flavor, as she performed tracks off her albums Fake It Flowers and Beatopia. There’s a dreamy quality to beabadoobee when she sings — the audience was clearly enamored as she sang slower tracks like “He Gets Me So High” and “See You Soon.”
Though the spotlight was on Bea for the night, her band (or as they called themselves during the Manila show, the Jeepney Boys) were essential to the indie rock energy during the show, with Jacob, Eliana, and Luca killing it on lead guitar, bass, and drums respectively. Plus, they honestly rocked their basketball shorts and jersey fits that we’re sure they picked out at a tiangge!
Bea continued to tease her Tagalog skills throughout the night, exclaiming “Wow, ang init!” and even joking “This is our last song… Charot!” before playing crowd fave “Last Day on Earth.” After that, beabadoobee and the band walked off the stage, but of course, Filipino fans weren’t ready for the concert to end! The crowd started chanting, “Isa pa! Isa pa!”
To everyone’s delight, she came back on stage with her acoustic guitar to sing the song that launched her into stardom: “Coffee.” The audience sang along to every word! Finally, beabadoobee brought the band back on stage for one last song “Cologne,” ending the show on a high note!
We know this girl’s got a bright career ahead of her, and we’re so glad she brought Beatopia to Manila on this tour! Thank you to Live Nation PH for making this possible. We’ll be looking forward to her next trip home!
